Regulation of lobbyists and lobbying activity has increased significantly in recent years. The federal government, every state, and a growing number of municipalities require lobbyists to register and file activity reports. If your organization has one registered lobbyist in every state and at the federal level, then you are responsible, at a minimum for filing 365 activity reports every year.
Reporting requirements have become increasingly complex with some states requiring disclosure of every lobbying related expenditure..."dollar one reporting." More than half of the states require lobbyists to disclose compensation received for lobbying activity and almost every state has banned contingent fees for lobbying activity. In addition to financial disclosure, many states require lobbyists to disclose specific issues or legislation lobbied on and the names of government officials they met with. Attorney Scott Stetson, Principal with Lobbyist Compliance Services, Inc. can help you navigate the complex and constantly changing laws regulating lobbying activity. |
